Working together for peace and sustainable development in Ghana for present and future generations; UN at 79 marked in Ghana
24 October 2024
For 79 years, the United Nations has left its footprint across the globe through humanitarian works, peace, and sustainable development.
A flag-raising ceremony was held today in Accra to celebrate 79 years of the establishment of the UN. It was on the theme: "UN at 79: Working Together for Peace and Sustainable Development in Ghana for Present and Future Generations" reinforcing Ghana and the UN’s mutual commitment to peace, development and human rights.
Speaking at the flag-raising ceremony, the Country Director of UNFPA and UN Resident Coordinator ai, Dr. Wilfred Ochan, reiterated the need for collaboration and solidarity as the pathway to a successful sustainable future and to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. "Through our combined efforts, harnessing the skills, expertise, and strengths of the various agencies, funds, and programs, both residential and non-residential, the UN in Ghana will continue to support the country in achieving its development priorities," he said.
Dr. Ochan urged Ghana to continue upholding its reputation as a beacon of peace in the sub-region. "As we approach the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, we must all remember that peace is the glue that binds this great nation together. It is therefore essential, now more than ever, to reaffirm our commitments to peace and democracy," calling on all Ghanaians to join the #IPledgeForPeace campaign.
The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law, adding that "By working collaboratively, across sectors and across borders, we can ensure that Ghana, and indeed the world, becomes a place where future generations can thrive in peace and prosperity."
Mr. Ampratwum-Sarpong further called on Ghanaians to resolve to place Ghana above everything else during the upcoming elections. "Our precious lives, valuable properties, and the attainment of much-needed progress and prosperity depend on our concerted efforts to promote peace."
This year's UN Day activities in Ghana include a Peace Walk, a Model UN event for junior high school students, and a Flag-Raising Ceremony, as well as a Photo Exhibition.
Gracing the event were officials from the Ghana Armed Forces and Heads of Security Services, Excellencies and Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Heads of UN Agencies, Representatives of Civil Society Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations, Youth, and Students.
