The UN in Ghana recently organized a dissemination dialogue in Accra with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
After a year of diligently pursuing the goals outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2023-2025) for Ghana, the UN in Ghana recently organized a dissemination dialogue in Accra with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). The aim was to socialise the Cooperation Framework, foster knowledge exchange, boost engagement, share results of work done, and rally a broad spectrum of partners to bolster its successful implementation. This event marks the inaugural session of a series of four dialogues scheduled to be conducted with various partners including the public and private sectors, as well as development partners.
In his remarks, the UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr. Charles Abani underscored the significance of the Cooperation Framework. He emphasized the need for continuous adaptation to changing global dynamics, stressing, "the idea of a static Cooperation Framework... is not sufficient. How do we strengthen the role of Government, Civil Society, and the Private Sector to deliver on behalf of Ghanaians?" he asked.
The UN resident Coordinator’s Office advisors provided insights into Ghana's progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), detailed progress made since the launch of the Cooperation Framework in April 2023, and the status of UN Ghana UNInfo, a comprehensive platform detailing the UN's work in Ghana. The platform also serves as a comprehensive resource hub, providing Ghanaians with all the information they seek regarding the programmes, resources and areas of work of the UN in country. The Platform aims at enhancing coherence, transparency, and accountability of the work of the UN.
The dialogue drew a strong turnout and fostered active engagement, with representatives from CSOs actively participating and commending the initiative. The discussions and inquiries from participants primarily focused on enhancing community competence, strengthening community systems, and fostering peace and security, particularly exploring avenues for collaboration between the UN and CSOs to tackle conflict-related challenges. Concerns were voiced regarding the bureaucratic procedures within the UN system, prompting appeals for the UN to establish coordination principles to streamline collaborative efforts with CSOs. Participants emphasized the importance of engaging with grassroots CSOs to effectively address local issues and national.
Looking ahead, the UN Resident Coordinator highlighted the upcoming Summit of the Future in New York, scheduled for September, aimed at accelerating SDGs and addressing emerging challenges and opportunities.
