On the citation to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, the United Nations in Ghana writes
“Your leadership has been marked by wisdom, humility, and integrity… [we] appreciate and commend you for your… exceptional contribution to fostering and nurturing peace, constructive dialogue, inclusion, and progress in Ghana”.
At age 104, the National Chief Imam of Ghana is one of a few revered clerics of our time; a truly Islamic model of peace, filled with wisdom and knowledge. His contribution to peacebuilding in Ghana cannot be overestimated.
It is in recognition of this and to pay homage to the Chief Imam that a delegation from the United Nations in Ghana, led by the Resident Coordinator, Mr. Charles Abani, paid a courtesy call on him at his residence in Fadama on 30 June 2023. The UN expressed gratitude and admiration for the National Chief Imam’s pivotal role in promoting social harmony and religious tolerance. The visit was also an occasion to celebrate Eid Adha together with Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu and the Muslim community, while emphasizing the importance of interfaith dialogue in furthering peace and inclusivity.
“This is the third day following Eid Adha, and as we know in our tradition Eid Adha lasts two days, so it's not out of place that we come today and bring glad tidings from the United Nations here in Ghana. So, we wish to… say, Barka Da Salah” said Mr. Abdourahamane Diallo, UNESCO Representative in Ghana as he introduced the delegation to the National Chief Imam.
Mr. Charles Abani commended the National Chief Imam for his role in fostering peace. “You have played a very strong role … in fact the signature of your message of peace is everywhere,” said Mr. Abani. He further called on the National Chief Iman to continue his role in fostering and nurturing peace to ensure no one is left behind, adding that “we will continue to rely on your leadership to make sure no one is left behind … Ghana is for everyone”.
The National Chief Imam warmly welcomed the UN in Ghana delegation, including Heads of agencies and programmes, and thanked them for their visit, emphasizing the relevance of working together even from diverse backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of fostering peace and unity among diverse communities, regardless of their religious or cultural backgrounds and the need to use constructive speech instead of hate speech. “We should cease fighting among ourselves … we should talk to people in terms that are peaceful and good” he said.
