Deploying to the Frontlines for Peace: One Woman's Journey to a Peacekeeping Mission
09 March 2023
Coming soon to UN Story, a documentary series based on one woman’s journey from her home in Accra, Ghana, through her trials and triumphs as a woman peacekeeper serving with the United Nations in Lebanon. Training her body and mind, Lt. Esinam Baah sets out to lead her platoon for a year with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Lt. Baah is one of 173 women deploying to UNIFIL as part of Ghana’s military contingent – 50 more than the previous year. They will live in new gender-sensitive accommodations designed to address obstacles to their full participation in the traditionally male-dominated world of peacekeeping, thanks to the Elsie Initiative.
UN Peacekeeping works with Member states and partners to increase the deployment and meaningful participation of uniformed women in peace operations to better reflect the communities it serves and help build inclusive peace.
