'Oranging' the Streets of Accra with One Message: “Stop SGB Violence”

As the 16 Days campaign gains momentum in Ghana, the United Nations in Ghana joins partners in a walk on the street of Accra calling for an end to SGBV.
The UN in Ghana joined the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection and partners in a walk to raise their voices against gender-based violence as part of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence capaign. The nearly 4 kilometers walk started from Circle, a popular business district in Accra, and ended on the premises of the Ministry.
“Women and children are the most vulnerable groups to suffer different kinds of violence”, said the UN Resident Coordinator, Charles Abani in a short solidarity message delivered during the walk. The Resident Coordinator expressed his sincere gratitude to the Ministry for organizing the walk. He said he looks forward to the day when such awareness raising exercises would be a thing of the past because we would have put an end to sexual and gender-based violence.
The Chief Director of the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, on behalf of the Minister, emphasized that violence in any form against women and children is unacceptable.
Participating in the walk were staff of the UN, including the Heads of UNOPS, UNICEF and UNDP, the UK Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Harriet Thompson, staff of the Ministry and representatives of various local groups. Some held placards with inscriptions like “End gender-based violence now”, “No means NO” and “Our bodies re not public property”.
