2023 International Day of UN Peacekeepers statement by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Kofi Amankwa-Manu delivered at the flag-raising and wreath-laying.
I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Armed Forces High Command for the privilege extended to me as the Guest of Honour for this solemn ceremony.
Today, we gather here on this auspicious occasion to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. This year's commemoration, under the theme "Peace begins with me: 75 years of UN Peacekeeping," not only signifies a significant milestone but also provides us with a precious opportunity to reflect on the invaluable contribution of the uniformed and civilian personnel to the work of the United Nations. It is a time for us to honor and remember the more than 4,000 peacekeepers who have made the ultimate sacrifice, laying down their lives in service to humanity since 1948.
The United Nations peacekeepers embody the spirit of unity, collaboration, and sacrifice. They come from different nations, cultures, and backgrounds, united by a common goal: to protect the vulnerable, uphold human rights, and promote stability in areas torn apart by conflict. Their presence brings hope to those affected by violence and turmoil, offering a glimmer of light in the darkest of times.
Distinguished Guests, this year holds particular significance for Ghana, as we reflect on our nation's extensive involvement in UN peacekeeping missions since the 1960s. It is with great pride that we share our unwavering commitment to global peace and security, as we have contributed relentlessly to almost all UN missions, both as formed troops and individual uniformed personnel.
Currently, Ghana stands as the 10th top Troop Contributing Country (TCC) in UN peacekeeping, with a remarkable total of Two Thousand, Seven Hundred and Twenty-Two (2,722) uniformed personnel serving across eleven (11) UN peacekeeping missions worldwide. This significant presence demonstrates our nation's unwavering commitment to supporting peacekeeping efforts and maintaining international peace and security. We commend and honor all Ghanaian peacekeepers who have served selflessly, often in challenging and dangerous environments, and express our deepest gratitude to their families for their unwavering support.
Ladies and Gentlemen, on this momentous occasion, let us also reflect on the progress achieved through United Nations peacekeeping over the past 75 years. Peacekeeping has played a pivotal role in preventing conflicts, protecting civilians, and facilitating the restoration of stability in war-torn regions. It has provided a platform for dialogue and reconciliation, fostering trust among nations and communities. Through peacekeeping missions, the United Nations has worked tirelessly to create the conditions necessary for sustainable peace and development.
Ladies and Gentlemen, as we mark this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. Let us stand together in solidarity, pledging to support peacekeeping operations, provide the necessary resources, and empower our peacekeepers with the tools they need to carry out their vital missions.
Furthermore, we must recognize that peace begins with each one of us. It is not a responsibility solely entrusted to peacekeepers but a collective duty that we all share. We must foster a culture of peace in our communities, promote dialogue, and address the root causes of conflict. By working together, we can create a world where peace is not an elusive dream but a tangible reality for all.
In conclusion, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to all the peacekeepers, both past and present, for their selfless service, unwavering courage, and steadfast commitment to the cause of peace. We pay tribute to the fallen heroes and honor their memory by continuing to strive for a world free from violence and conflict.
Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
May this 75th anniversary of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers serve as a reminder of our shared responsibility to work tirelessly for peace, stability, and justice. Let us recommit ourselves to the noble ideals of the United Nations and forge a future where generations to come can live in a world of lasting peace.
Thank you.
