76th UN Day Observed in Accra with a Flag-raising Ceremony
26 October 2021
Observed each year on October 24, UN Day provides an opportunity to "amplify our common agenda and reaffirm the purposes and principles of the UN Charter..."
In Ghana the 76th UN Day was marked with a short solemn ceremony where both the UN and Ghana flags were hoisted affirming Ghana's continuous support for the global organisation.
The event was attended by the security services, members of the diplomatic community, Heads of UN agencies, representatives of CSOs/NGOs, youth groups and students. The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong and the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Ghana, Mr. Charles Abani jointly inspected a small parade mounted by the Ghana Armed Forces.
In his address, Mr. Charles Abani expressed gratitude to the Government and people of Ghana for their recognition of the values of the United Nations and continuous support since joining the Organization 64 years ago. He noted that despite the challenges experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghana’s choice of a theme that focuses on “Working together for a sustainable and inclusive society towards recovery…” lends credence to the stance that global solidarity and multilateralism is the way towards recovery and a more sustainable future.
Citing some critical interventions undertaken by the Government to ensure Ghana remains on track towards achieving its development goals, Hon. Ampratwum-Sarpong noted that “…it is in our collective interest to create the conditions that will enable development to serve the interest of all members of the Ghanaian society”, including young people. “It is clear that unless the issues related to education, health, skills, decent employment, participation, and rights of young people become central to policies, we will fail to achieve the goal of leaving no one behind” he added.
The Deputy Minister expressed appreciation to Member States for their overwhelming support to Ghana’s candidacy to serve on the Security Council for the term 2022-2023. He said Ghana will work to restore stability, peace and security in troubled areas.
The brief UN Day ceremony in Accra was graced with a touch of cultural performance by Seperewa Agofomaa group.
