African Commission Delegation Meets UN and Development Partners in Ghana to Advance Human Rights Implementation

A delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) today held strategic dialogue with UN in Ghana and development partners in Accra, as part of a Promotion Mission aimed at strengthening human rights implementation and regional collaboration.

Led by Hon. Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, Country Rapporteur for Ghana and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa, the delegation shared insights into the Commission’s mandate and highlighted the importance of compliance with the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and related instruments, including the Maputo Protocol.

Commissioner Sallah-Njie expressed concern that Ghana has not submitted its periodic human rights report to the Commission in over 24 years. 

“The Promotion Mission is an opportunity to deepen awareness, foster dialogue, and identify pathways for stronger national implementation of the African human rights framework,” said Commissioner Sallah-Njie.

The delegation engaged in constructive discussions with UN officials and development partners, sharing their observations on a wide range of areas related to health, employment and environment as well as exploring areas for technical and institutional support. The UN was led by Dr. Wilfred Ochan, UNFPA Country Representative and Chair of the UN Human Rights working group, on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Zia Choudhury.

The delegation included Commissioners Hatem Essaiem, Chairperson of the Committee on the Prevention of Torture in Africa; Solomon Ayele Dersso, Chairperson of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations; Hon. Maria Teresa Manuela, Special Rapporteur on Prisons, Conditions of Detention and Policing in Africa; and. Mudford Zachariah Wandega, Chairperson of the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

The ACHPR supports Member States in upholding the rights enshrined in the African Charter and advancing the dignity, safety, and freedoms of all people across the continent.
